Are We Friends?

I wrote a tweet yesterday that referred to a twitter/blogger/critter girl as a friend. I had the sudden thought- huh, are we friends? Obviously, I think so since I wrote the darn thing, but it’s made me think more about all of you lovely blogging people.

I can say any number of your names to my boyfriend and he’ll immediately know who I’m talking about. Have I ever met any of you lovely people? Nope, but I sure talk about you like I have.

It’s an interesting cyber-world we live in. We talk relatively frequently, whether through blogging or twitter. We share secrets we don’t mention to those we see in the real world. We talk about our writing- probably the most intimate parts of ourselves are there.

Does that mean we’re friends? What do you think?

I totally think so. I talk about my writing/blogging buddies all the time. Because truly, there is no one in my face-to-face like that can even come close to relating to me on my writing and reading endeavors.

Friends lift you up, stretch you, make you a better person and support you in the ways they can.

    That makes us friends 🙂

  • I’d like to hope so. I share things in my writing with people that even my family don’t know!

And my days would feel weird without the daily contact with my online writer friends. I spend more time with them than with my real life friends. Does that make me sad?

  • Interesting question Juliana–hadn’t really defined it I guess. I find myself saying fellow blogger, writer, etc, but then again we all support each other so much–and that’s what a friend does, right? 🙂
You’ve got a friend in me!

  • Well considering I talk to my blog buddies more than my ‘friends’ I would have to say a big YES, you are my friend Juliana:)

  • Krispy says:

YES, we’re either friends or on the way to becoming friends! Like you said and like other commenters have said, we support each other so much and share so much and some of that isn’t stuff we share with people in real life!

I wouldn’t say I’m friends with everyone I know online – there are some people I don’t interact with much. But there are definitely those people you meet where you can feel the chemistry – you have similar interests, senses of humor, whatever – and you just know if you were to meet them in real life you would be friends. So yes, those people are friends 🙂

  • I sure think so, it’s so much fun and friends have fun right?

  • I consider my on-line writer friends some of my best supporters. Very willing to share information and experiences.

  • I think we’re like pen-pals from different places. We wouldn’t know one another if we bumped into each other in the street, but we know enough about each other that if we did meet, it wouldn’t take long to get up to real-friend speed.

  • That’s funny, Juliana. I feel the same way. I find myself talking about writer “friends” online, and my husband, kids and family look at me like I’m crazy.

But, yes, I think we can call each other friends. Definitely!

Of course we’re friends how dare you! And I send our tweets to Maria V. Snyder, btw.

I definitely think of my internet friends as real friends. When I was a kid, I had a bunch of penpals that I grew really close to through letters, and I don’t think internet friends are any different. True friendship knows no bounds, right?
