My Writing Process

The lovely Lauren Spieller invited invited me to participate in the #MyWritingProcess blog tour, which is a chain-letter style blogging tour where authors answer four questions about the writing process, then pass the torch on to three more writers (though admittedly, I’m only sending this on to one other writer–everybody I know has already done this!).

Here’s the Q&A:

1. What am I working on?

Currently, I’m working on an incredibly fun YA Fantasy. I’ve been working hard for the past year on books more serious in tone, and felt it was time to write something that was purely fun for me. It has all of the things I love in a fantasy: fun characters, adventure, a quest, pirates, a beautiful landscape, and strange magic!

2. How does my work differ from others of its genre?

I’ve written quite a few books over the years (err…8. Man that feels like a lot…), and all of them have been quite different from one another. My current WIP though is different in a few ways! One of which is that the main character, if she were to live in our world, would likely be diagnosed as having Asperger’s Syndrome. In this fantasy world, her symptoms end up being quite positive and help her on the journey.

3. Why do I write what I do?

Honestly, I’m not sure there’s another choice! I adore storytelling and can’t imagine doing anything else.

4. How does my writing process work?

Oi, each book I’ve written has come about from a different process. I’ve pantsed. I’ve intensely plotted. I’ve written a book, then re-written it, and re-written it again. I’ve drafted books in a month, and also taken six months to write another. What I’ve learned is to listen to each book and not fight it (does that make me sound crazy?). For this WIP though, I drafted it in about six weeks (70k words). Before I started, I knew the major plot points and most of the connective tissue. I’m a strong believer though in letting the story flow, so usually, I don’t plot too seriously. After the first draft, I gave it a quick once over, and sent it on to CPs. Now, I’m in the middle of my first round of edits!

Next up on the Writing Process Blog Tour is the adorably sweet Roselle Kaes! She is a self-proclaimed sufferer from creative ADHD. I live in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere on the north shore of Lake Erie. She’s immensely tallented at all things art: writing, sewing, and painting.

You guys, this girl can write!

COVER REVEAL for the PAPER MAGICIAN! by Charlie N. Holmberg

I’m SO EXCITED to be able to share the cover for THE PAPER MAGICIAN by Charlie N. Holmberg with you guys! This is one of my very favorite books that I’ve read in the last year.

But first, before the cover, here’s a bit about the book:

The Paper Magician

Ceony Twill arrives at the cottage of Magician Emery Thane with a broken heart. Having graduated at the top of her class from the Tagis Praff School for the Magically Inclined, Ceony is assigned an apprenticeship in paper magic despite her dreams of bespelling metal. And once she’s bonded to paper, that will be her only magic…forever.

Yet the spells Ceony learns under the strange yet kind Thane turn out to be more marvelous than she could have ever imagined—animating paper creatures, bringing stories to life via ghostly images, even reading fortunes. But as she discovers these wonders, Ceony also learns of the extraordinary dangers of forbidden magic.

An Excisioner—a practitioner of dark, flesh magic—invades the cottage and rips Thane’s heart from his chest. To save her teacher’s life, Ceony must face the evil magician and embark on an unbelievable adventure that will take her into the chambers of Thane’s still-beating heart—and reveal the very soul of the man.

Born in Salt Lake City, Charlie was raised a Trekkie alongside three sisters who also have boy names. In addition to writing fantasy novels, she is also a freelance editor. She graduated from BYU, plays the ukulele, owns too many pairs of glasses, and hopes to one day own a dog. The Paper Magician is her debut novel and the first in a whimsical series exploring a world of magicians who animate manmade materials. She currently lives with her family in Utah.

And now! For the beautiful cover!
