Ine Mene Mine Mo…

How strange it is to write a post that doesn’t have to do with the blogfest. It literally took me all week for me to land on a topic, but I finally have *whew*

How do you guys choose who to read your first drafts?

Cadaver Dog is going through its first round of edits. I’ll start on the second in a week or so. After that, I’ll see if I can do another round on my own or if I need to ask for help from my lovely critters.

But I’ve had a tough time deciding who to send to. I have five lovely critters, all of whom are fabulous writers with a gift for critiquing.

Sophia– poor Sophia, I’ve asked her to read some pretty bad writing and bad first drafts in the past year. This is who I’ll probably go to for my first edits as she has yet to complain about my poor writing 😉 I always know that with Soph, I’ll get the big picture- the big things that are missing that I seem to graze right over. She often gives me the ‘Ohhh, duh! How did I miss that??’ moments from her critiques.

Misty just published her novel Cornerstone. It’s amazing. Go read it. Misty has a mind for storytelling. She thinks around stories in a way I don’t. She’s especially brilliant with character development.

Janice is a world builder. I always know that she’ll find any missing issues with my world building. This is one reason why I enjoy reading her writing so darn much.

JJ is extremely talented with line edits, catching punctuation and grammar errors that I pass right over. I’ll turn to him when I think I’ve caught the bigger edits and need to make the actual writing flawless.

Jessica reads WIPs like she’s actually reading a book. She finds flaws that are obvious and glaring, but as the writer, I completely miss them.

So, who should I send to?

Do you all send to just one person for the first read, or two? Do you only send the first chapters or the whole darn thing? Thankfully, I don’t have to make this decision quite yet, but seriously, I’m starting to get quite confused about it. Any advice, fellow writers?

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, everyone!!

  • Wow! How nice to have so many wonderful people to send your wip too! I am all alone, sigh, I wish I had your problem. LOL!

This is how I suggest you send it out:
    Jessica-to find the holes
Janice-to make sure your world doesn’t defy the space time continum
Sophia (to give her a break from the first first draft)
JJ to clean up the boo-boos
and Misty to give it the final polish

    How did I do?

    Good Luck!
    Shellie

  • You have a great list of people there. I have a couple of betas for longer stuff and a big team of picture book friends on a forum. Good luck deciding, you have some great tips here. And Happy Thanksgiving!

  • How wonderful you have so much support. I send to one person at a time. I get different perspectives and types of critique depending on the person. I never have the same exact mix of people either. This has been working for me.

    Great job on the blogfest!

  • I think Shellie’s onto something! I like the way you think, girl!
And now I have to go buy a map and a new car and pack all my stuff (and Larry Dog) and drive all over the world to find you just so I can hug you. Thanks for including me, Juliana. I love being your crit buddy because you are a brilliant writer and that makes critting yourself enjoyable and fun. Wherever I land on the crit list, I’m happy to be part of it. 🙂

  • It’s always hard to know who to go to first. I have about 5 people now who read my stuff, and it’s always important to get them at the right moment.

I think nailing the story is the most important part, so send to the one who will read it with that in mind first. All the smaller details can be fixed later, but if there’s a glaring big hole in your plot, that needs fixing first.

  • You have a great list of people to support you–awesome!! So far I’ve done the chapter by chapter thing, only to see if there’s any added excitement about looking forward to the next chapter. 🙂

  • Sounds like you’re making the right choice with Sophia first.

How wonderful that you have such a wealth of lovely people to read your WIPs! I like Shellie’s plan above for how to go about this one 🙂 Have a happy Thanksgiving!

  • This is an interesting topic and an important choice for a writer to make. I think you should probably only have one person do the first read through. At that point you probably want to focus on the big things, and odds are that there would be a lot of overlap between two critiquers on those issues. Subsequent drafts you might want to send to more than one person. At that stage, looking at the details, critiquers would be more likely to come up with different suggestions and responses.

You sound like you have a great group of crit partners. From the sounds of it, I’d choose Sophia and/or Jessica because it seems like they focus on the bigger picture. Since this is an early draft, I’d want to know as soon as possible if like certain plot lines aren’t working or if there’s a big plot hole somewhere or if a character is flat. Then you can fix that before you get to the more nitty gritty stuff like worldbuilding and technical edits.

    Have a great Thanksgiving!

    hahahaha This is AMAZING.

So Juliana, you’re my first and last reader – didn’t know if you knew this.

And I feel so warmed to hear your comments – I’m not gonna lie, those are some rough drafts I’ve seen lol. But I can also see the seeds of the story in them. And since I love fantasy, the world-building is interesting to me every time.

But yes, thank you Shellie for letting go further in Juliana’s drafts! 😀
